Property Tax Reform

The state requirement that forces municipalities to rely solely on the property tax to support town services places a heavy tax burden on residents. While there are many elements to comprehensive property tax relief, a critical part must be greater state funding for education for Branford and similarly situated towns. We enjoy a uniquely collegial relationship with our state senator, Edward Meyer, and will work with Senator Meyer and our other representatives in the State Legislature to increase state funding for the Payments in Lieu of Taxes programs and to get the state to pay at least fifty percent of each municipality’s education costs, including paying all Special Education costs for each municipality.

Our proven ability to form coalitions will allow our Town to lead the shoreline towns in a coordinated and united effort in Hartford to ease the disproportionate burden our taxpayers bear. We pledge to work with our fellow municipal leaders along the shoreline to make our voices heard in Hartford. The error of opportunity missed during this budget year will not be repeated once we return to office. We will help make sure Branford’s voice is heard.
